Supervision and monitoring in Wau, WBGs

Introduction

In line with the partnership agreement signed between AFOD, UNICEF and WFP, quarterly support supervision and monitoring has been provided for to ensure technical assistance is offered to the field teams in the implementation of the planned activities and progress of activities is assessed. AFOD county office conducted a monitoring and supervisory visit of the current nutrition project in Wau County from 20th to 24th February 2023.  This visit also provided opportunity to network and advocate with local leaders and donors in WBG state to strengthen their involvement and participation in the project other and also lobby for additional resources to supplement the current projects.  

Purpose of the visit: The main purpose of the visit was to monitor activity progress, provide technical assistance in the implementation of the nutrition activities in WBG state and advocate for additional resources to complement current projects.

Specific objectives

  • To monitor nutrition activity implementation, identify good practices, opportunities and address challenges affecting project delivery.
  • To strengthen state level collaboration/coordination, advocacy and networking.
  • To carry out staff meeting in order to strengthen teamwork amongst the staff and handle administrative matters affecting operations.

Following the Outbreak of Covid-19 which crippled most of the activities world wide, Russia and Ukraine War and worsening economic situation in South Sudan and around the globe, Malnutrition within south Sudan is on the rise as cases of wasting are reported in some parts of the Country due to common factors like sharing of supplies among households, unsafe child care practices like a child is taken care of by a single parent, etc. UNICEF and AFOD are partners implementing Nutrition in Wau and Raga counties of WBGS who organised supervision field visit to understand the nutrition context and the malnutrition preventative measures put in place at the facilities.

Recommendations and Comments

  • Encourage the beneficiaries to diversify nutrient rich foods (Animal & vegetables) like Eggs, Chicken, Fish, beans, G-nuts or peas.
  • Encourage the families/communities to set up kitchen gardens with variety of nutrient rich foods to ensure balanced diet
  • Encourage Health and nutrition education with both the women and their husbands to ensure full support
  • Encourage good hygiene practices
