Central Equatoria Livestock Show and Wrestling

Promoting livestock commercialization and peaceful coexistence among communities in South Sudan

Context :South Sudan is rich in livestock resources, with an estimated 36 million cows, sheep and goats in the country. However, many South Sudanese do not benefit to the full potential from those resources, principally because cultural norms do not put an emphasis on productive traits of animals, particularly cattle. Due to use of cattle for dowry and as a source of social status in South Sudan, many livestock keepers are more concerned with quantity than quality of livestock. Furthermore, the desire for large numbers of livestock is one of the elements leading to cattle-raiding related conflict among agro-pastoralist communities.
